Julie Gurnell

Julie Gurnell is a Goldsmiths College, University of London, UK trained Art Psychotherapist with 10 years’ experience working in Mental Health with Adults, Children and Adolescents in the NHS until 2010. Thereafter returning to work in private practice in Cape Town, South Africa. She has experience working in the NPO sector, inpatient psychiatric settings, multi-disciplinary community psychological therapy teams, school settings, correctional settings, open art therapy studios and DDU art therapy groups.

Julie is also trained in EMDR Level 2 and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Part 1, both extremely effective protocols for resolving PTSD and trauma related symptomatology.  Her approach is to integrate more recent neuroscience research with regards to body and mind work.  This approach includes psycho-education, emotional regulation and trauma processing when clinically indicated.

Julie’s private practice is in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town, 11 Fowes Rd,  Wynberg.  She works with moderate to complex and severe mental health diagnoses, particularly where early attachment and developmental trauma is indicated.  Single incident traumatic events leading to a PTSD diagnosis are very effectively resolved with the EMDR protocol.  She is passionate about image making in Art therapy as an effective vehicle in therapy to support resolving emotional and psychological difficulties and facilitating on-going development and healing.
