Kirstie Nel

Kirstie is an Afrikaans- and English-speaking art therapist based in the northern suburbs of Cape Town (MA Creative Arts Therapies, Art Therapy, University of Haifa, Israel 2015-2017). She has experience working with various client groups, across the lifespan, and is interested in how the arts can contribute to our wellbeing and deeper understandings of our stories.

“Kamma”, the name of Kirstie’s art therapy studio located in Kenridge, is borrowed from the Khoi language meaning fresh water or sweet-water river. Since she relocated recently to the area, the studio will only be taking appointments starting January 2022.  She is currently involved with sessional work and workshops at schools, NGO’s and other settings.

She is passionate about furthering the field of art therapy in South Africa and has published journal articles with a focus on autoethnography, disabilities, sociocultural and critical theory. She also gave a presentation about her work with Frontline Support (a collective of arts therapists who provide crises counselling and emotional support services during the COVID-19 pandemic) at the Canadian Art Therapy Association’s Virtual Conference in 2020.

In contrast to her academic writing she also has a love for poetry and creative writing as a means to express life stories, make sense of events and contribute to her own creative health.
